An Italian infatuation

Ah, bella Italia. Where all things passion and beauty reign supreme. Romance is written in the language, pours from the music and sings in the cuisine. But have you ever wondered how Italians display their devotion towards their amores? Let’s discover how to romance, Italian style!

A taste for romance

Food is the way to the heart... and this is nowhere more true than in Italy! During la festa degli innamorati (the day of lovers – or Valentine’s Day) Italians celebrate with romantic meals and sweet treats – particularly Baci Perugina chocolates filled with cherries and wrapped in tiny love notes.

Thinking of impressing your other half with a gourmet Italian meal? You’re in luck! We’ll learn how to cook a classic Tuscan delicacy on our 13-day Italian Indulgence tour (departing April – October). And if you’re on the hunt for Italian recipes sooner rather than later, discover how to rustle up a classic carbonara courtesy of our Italian Tour Leader Flavio!

A love letter

Romeo and Juliet – the quintessential love story. It’s no surprise then that Verona becomes the beating heart of romance in February. Each year, thousands of would-be-authors send letters addressed to “Juliet”, which are answered by members of the Juliet Club. The most touching love letter is also rewarded with a prize. Time to put that quill to use!

On the 13 and 14 February the ‘Verona in Love’ festival envelops the city, with a Valentine’s market in the main square set up in the shape of a heart, free concerts, and a minute-long kiss for those keen romantics!

A lakeside apéritif

When it comes to romantic spots, the Italian lakes are hard to match – from the tranquil lapping waters of Lake Orta to the stunning mountain-fringed shores of Lake Como. We’ll have plenty of time to slow the pace and soak up the atmosphere on our Italian adventure, including two nights in exquisite Lake Maggiore. How’s that for a Negroni with a view!

A moonlit city stroll

The cast of the moon reveals Italian cities in a different, alluring light. So make like the locals and explore by night! Italians eat dinner later rather than earlier – often around 9pm in the balmy summer evenings. A moonlit wander around Rome or Florence is the perfect excuse to walk off that extra helping of lasagne or tiramisu... And of course steal a moment with your loved one, bask in the scenery, and imagine the love stories that came before.

A boat made for two

Admittedly, this one may be more for holidaymakers rather than the locals... But who can resist one of the most romantic experiences Italy has to offer? Floating peacefully past grand palaces and through elegant bridges – it’s no wonder a gondola ride along the Grand Canal remains one of the top things to do in Venice. The perfect finale to your intimate Italian escape!
